San Marcos, CA-September 1, 2004-
Effective July 1st, 2006 the EU Directive 2002/95/EC titled RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) goes into effect. Article 4, section 1 of this directive lists certain substances that will be banned in the use of electrical, and electronic equipment. These substances are:
- Lead (Pb)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+)
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)
Lead is the only one of the above that is in Sullins Electronics’ components. The Lead is used in the plating, which is 90% tin and 10% Lead.
Sullins Electronics currently offers connectors in a lead free option using pure tin in place of the tin/lead.
Sullins Electronics understands that the impact of this initiative goes beyond just changing plating material from tin/lead to pure tin on our contacts. We know that the processing temperatures our customers will be using on their end will increase due to the solders they will be using. We are currently researching all of our materials to define which ones will be compatible at these higher temperatures. This procedure is scheduled to be complete in Q1 2005.
Sullins Electronics will be implementing JEDEC Std 97 (JESD97), “Marking, Symbols, and Labels for Identification of Lead (Pb) Free Assemblies, Components, and Devices”. This transition should be complete by Q1 2005.
